We flew from Pereira to Medellín. After lunch, we turned our route to Comuna 13.
Medellín is a city that has been associated with violence, drug dealing and inequality for many years. Today, Comuna 13 is one of the places that tells the transformation of this past without covering it up. Escalators made transportation easier in the neighborhood built on the slopes; Murals, dance and music have reconstructed public space.
We felt that the change here was not only with new buildings. The neighborhood telling its own story, young people becoming visible through art, and visitors listening to the past were also part of the transformation.
We saw another face of Medellín in Botero's voluminous, calm and unique sculptures. In the evening, we met with the contemporary cuisine of the city at Carmen and El Cielo. At the end of the day, Medellín made us think that a difficult past does not have to translate into a single identity.
