Vathy, Pothia and Agios Savvas

At last the wind stopped. At 9.00 am we set off to explore the bays of Kalymnos.

Vathy is a deep inlet winding between high bare cliffs. Its narrow entrance is often described as a fjord. We reached the tiny fishing village before the excursion boats arrived. Derin posed on the swing installed in front of a sea cave, and we climbed to the church above.

At around 5.00 pm we continued to Pothia. Derin and Sanem explored by bicycle. After Derin swam in a small local bathing cove, we tackled the very steep climb to Agios Savvas Monastery. The view over the town and harbour made the effort worthwhile.

The monastery is dedicated to Saint Savvas, regarded as the protector of Kalymnos. Born in Eastern Thrace in 1862, he spent the final years of his life here as a spiritual guide and icon painter, and was canonised in 1992.

That evening, after debating between Manias and Exantas, we chose a local restaurant in a side street. We came across another panigiri, complete with dancers in traditional costume, honey stalls and freshly cooked loukoumades.
