Koggala and the Indian Ocean

February 3, 2026 | Koggala and Southern Beaches

We devoted this day to relaxing by the sea instead of a busy schedule. Southern coasts of Sri Lanka; it shows the calmer side of the country with its strong waves, palm trees and fishing villages.

On the shore, we saw traditional pole fishing, which has become one of the symbols of Sri Lanka. Of course I tried it too. Fishermen catch fish coming to the shore with the waves with simple fishing rods and balance on narrow poles placed in the sea.

I was caught in such a rain that Gökhan Canhıraş took me inside thinking that lightning would strike me. Although this method is not as widely used today, it remains one of the most recognizable images of coastal culture.

Our Ayurvedic massage relaxed us.

We spent the last full day of the journey more slowly, accompanied by the sound of the sea and the non-stop movement of the ocean.
