Waves, Whales and Maui

We explore the island in a rental car. The coast seems to be everywhere; the sea is clean and the water warm. What will remain with me from Maui? Waves, whales and Mai Tais—and the chickens and roosters that wander freely through the streets. Istanbul has its cats; Hawaiʻi has its feral chickens.

Our most unforgettable story is the bag and our phones that the waves swept away. We emerged from the water looking shipwrecked, everything soaked and covered in sand. Apparently one has to be more careful in an unfamiliar place. Still, at least I ended up with a new phone!

Driving between Maui’s different shores, we watch the volcanic mountains, clouds and ocean form an ever-changing whole. Every bend brings another shade of blue and every bay a different wind.
