Arrival in Hawaiʻi

Aloha! We are in the Hawaiian Islands, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, roughly 13,365 kilometres from Turkey and thirteen hours behind home. No one knows exactly when people first reached Hawaiʻi, although current research suggests that Polynesians settled the islands between AD 1000 and 1200. Empires had risen, wars had been fought, and art and literature had flourished elsewhere in the world, yet Hawaiʻi was so remote that people reached it only centuries later.

Waikiki, Aloha and ʻOhana

We are on famous Waikiki Beach, where shallow, sandy, warm water meets golden sand. Ocean swells rise as they approach the shallower seabed and reefs, making Waikiki an exceptional place for beginner surfers. I would certainly recommend the ocean-view rooms at the Sheraton Waikiki. Coming to the shore at sunrise, watching the surfers, and drinking Hawaiian coffee over an açaí bowl is wonderful.

Pearl Harbor

One of the first places that comes to mind in Honolulu is Pearl Harbor. The harbour really does sit inside a pearl-like bay. This is where Japan’s attack on the United States Pacific Fleet on 7 December 1941 changed the course of the Second World War. The United States entered the war after the attack.

From the Hawaiian Kingdom to America’s Fiftieth State

Sugar cane was one of the crops that shaped the destiny of these islands. The growing plantations of the nineteenth century needed labour, supplied first by indentured workers from China and later by people from Japan, the Philippines, Korea and Portugal. This history helps explain why Hawaiʻi now has the highest proportion of residents of Asian descent of any US state.

From Honolulu to Maui

We fly from Honolulu to Maui. Our hotel stands on the bay where the first season of *The White Lotus* was filmed. Maui is greener, with a fertile valley stretching between two great volcanic mountains. The mountains shape winds and rainfall, so it is usually possible to find a calmer bay on another side of the island.

Waves, Whales and Maui

We explore the island in a rental car. The coast seems to be everywhere; the sea is clean and the water warm. What will remain with me from Maui? Waves, whales and Mai Tais—and the chickens and roosters that wander freely through the streets. Istanbul has its cats; Hawaiʻi has its feral chickens.

Fishing and the Journey Home

One day we go fishing. Our captain is wonderfully friendly. We troll, yet once again the fish we catch is a bottom-dwelling species. We take it to a nearby restaurant and eat it as fresh as it could possibly be. The sea, clouds and view are magnificent.
