One of the first places that comes to mind in Honolulu is Pearl Harbor. The harbour really does sit inside a pearl-like bay. This is where Japan’s attack on the United States Pacific Fleet on 7 December 1941 changed the course of the Second World War. The United States entered the war after the attack.
Pearl Harbor is also one of America’s most important military and naval bases in the Pacific. Walking among its ships, memorials and museums, we sense not only the beginning of a war for the United States but a great rupture that transformed the modern history of the Pacific.
